What is a yoga in Vedic astrology?

In Vedic astrology, a yoga (literally "union") is a named combination of planets — a specific structural pattern in the chart that classical sources read as bestowing a particular kind of gift or challenge. Hundreds of yogas exist in the classical canon (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra alone names dozens), but a smaller set — the ones below — covers most of what's referenced in modern practice.

Stack with placements. A yoga is a structural finding, but how it actually plays out depends on the placements feeding it: which houses they sit in, their dignity, and the dasa periods of the planets involved. A Raja Yoga held by a strong, well-dignified pair delivers what it promises during the dasa of either lord; the same yoga with weak or afflicted planets becomes a milder background signature.

Cancellations matter. Many "negative" yogas (Kemadruma especially) have multiple classical cancellations. A technical yoga in the chart isn't the same as a functionally-active one. Always read alongside the rest of the chart.
