Rahu

Rahu

Significator of paternal grandfather, foreign travel/residence, addictions, and unconventional desires

Rahu is the North Node of the Moon — a shadow planet, not a physical body, but a calculated point where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic going north. Rahu represents amplified desire, ambition without limit, the foreign and unconventional, modern technology, sudden gains and losses, addictions, illusion (maya), and the unsatisfied longing of the soul incarnated in this lifetime. Rahu has no own sign and takes on the qualities of whichever sign it occupies and whichever planet rules that sign. A strong Rahu can give extraordinary success in unconventional fields, foreign success, and innovation. An afflicted Rahu can manifest as obsession, addiction, scandal, deception, or chronic skin / nervous-system complaints. Rahu's purpose is to drive us toward what we lack, often through hunger that becomes wisdom only after exhaustion.

Remedial measures

Traditional Vedic remedies for strengthening this planet's positive qualities. Gemstones in particular should only be worn after consultation with a qualified Vedic astrologer who has examined your chart.

  • Durga Saptashati or Rahu Stotra recitation
  • Donating blankets, sesame, or shelter to a stranger
  • Service to outcasts, the marginalised
  • Avoiding intoxicants and gambling during Rahu periods
  • Hessonite garnet (after astrological consultation — Rahu remedies are subtle)

These notes synthesise classical Jyotish (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Saravali, Phaladeepika) and modern practitioner consensus. For personalised reading, compute your chart and read the planet in the context of its sign and house.
